The Parkway across the base and the I-95 cloverleaf
The Fairfax County Parkway, Route 286, ties into Route 1 near Accotink at its south end and runs northwest straight across Fort Belvoir. It crosses Interstate 95 on a full cloverleaf at exit 166 and leaves the base at the Telegraph Road diamond. That stretch moves like an expressway, so a breakdown there is a merge-speed situation, not a quiet shoulder. If you lose power on the Parkway, get as far right onto the shoulder as you can, past the cloverleaf ramps if possible, and stand well off the travel lane on the guardrail side while you wait. Dead batteries at the Lorton VRE park-and-ride
A big share of the fort's workforce does not drive the whole way in. They park at the Lorton VRE station off Lorton Station Boulevard, ride the Fredericksburg Line up to Alexandria, Crystal City and Union Station, and leave the car sitting in the lot all day. By the evening return, plenty of those cars will not turn over, especially in cold snaps and on an aging battery. An evening no-start at the Lorton commuter lot is one of our steadiest calls. The base hospital, now Alexander T. Augusta Military Medical Center at 9300 DeWitt Loop and long known as Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, pulls patients and visitors from across the region, not just people who live on post. That means a steady flow of unfamiliar drivers, long appointments, and cars left sitting for hours in the lots and decks. Lockouts and dead batteries here are routine, and because the campus sits inside the installation, access has to be arranged rather than assumed.
