Herndon is a commuter town wrapped around the Dulles Toll Road, and that shapes almost every call we run here. Since the Silver Line reached the Herndon station in the median of Route 267 in late 2022, more people leave a car parked all day and ride into Tysons and Washington, and the calls follow that rhythm. We work Elden Street, Herndon Parkway, Worldgate, and the toll road shoulder every week, so we know where the trouble clusters and how to reach you fast.
No-starts at the Herndon-Monroe garages
The Herndon-Monroe Park and Ride and the Herndon Metro station share two parking garages right off the Dulles Toll Road, holding a few thousand cars between them. Commuters roll in before 7 a.m., leave the car all day while they ride the Silver Line into Tysons or the District, and come back after dark. By the evening return, a share of those batteries are dead, especially in cold snaps and after a long weekend away. An evening jump-start at the garages is one of our most common Herndon calls. We test the battery and the charging system on scene so you are not stranded again a mile down Herndon Parkway. If the car is on an upper deck, tell our dispatcher at 703-844-2871 which garage and which level so the driver comes straight to you instead of circling the ramps.
Breakdowns on the Dulles Toll Road
The Dulles Toll Road, Route 267, runs along the south edge of Herndon, and it is a fast road with a narrow shoulder. When a car quits here, there is no walking to safety across the road, because the Silver Line tracks sit in the median. If you break down, get as far onto the right shoulder as you can, keep everyone belted inside with the doors on the traffic side closed, and put your hazards on. Then call us. Give the dispatcher your direction of travel and the last exit or overpass you passed, whether that is Herndon-Monroe, Fairfax County Parkway, or Route 28, so the driver approaches from the right side. We typically reach the shoulder in 20 to 40 minutes, and we stage the truck to shield you from traffic before we hook up.
Elden Street and the W&OD Trail crossing
Elden Street is the spine of Herndon, and it changes character as you drive it. Down by the toll road it is a wide commercial strip, then it narrows to a center-turn-lane road past Herndon Parkway, and by downtown it is a two-lane street through the old town. A breakdown on that narrow stretch blocks a live lane fast, and there is the added wrinkle of the W&OD Trail, which crosses Elden and Station Street at grade right by the Herndon Depot, so there are always walkers and cyclists in the mix. If your car is dying near downtown, try to coast onto a side street like Station, Lynn, or Van Buren rather than stopping on Elden. If you cannot, put your hazards on and call 703-844-2871, and we will work the truck in without adding to the mess at the crossing.
Lockouts and no-starts at Worldgate
Worldgate Centre off Worldgate Drive is the other place we run a lot of Herndon calls. It is the dinner-and-a-movie hub, sitting right by the toll road ramps, so it fills up in the evening and empties late. That mix produces two calls over and over: keys locked in a warm car while people are inside, and a no-start when they come back out. We handle both. It is also a spot where we get fender-bender tows near where Worldgate Drive meets Elden Street, since drivers are cutting across to reach the toll road entrance. Whatever needs to move, from a locked sedan to a car that will not roll, tell us where you are parked in the lot and we will find you.
