McLean is two towns stacked on top of each other, and both of them generate calls. On one side you have the quiet estate roads off Chain Bridge Road and Georgetown Pike, wooded lots and long driveways where a luxury sedan will not start on a cold morning. On the other you have the Tysons edge, the McLean Metro station, and the Route 123 cloverleaf feeding the Capital Beltway, where a breakdown drops you into fast traffic with nowhere good to stop. Breakdowns on the GW Parkway near Langley
The George Washington Memorial Parkway runs the eastern edge of McLean past the CIA at Langley, and it is unlike any other road we cover here. It is a National Park Service road, narrow and gently curving, with a grassy median, low stone guide walls, and heavy tree cover on both sides. There is very little usable shoulder. That heavy tree cover means down limbs across the road after storms, and very little room to get out of the way if you lose the car on that stretch. Dead batteries at the McLean Metro lots
The McLean Metro station sits on Dolley Madison Boulevard on the Silver Line, and there is still no permanent commuter garage at the station itself. Most riders park at a large commuter park-and-ride lot nearby, a surface lot that fills early as people ride into Tysons and downtown Washington and leave their cars sitting all day. By the evening return, a share of those cars will not turn over, especially in cold weather or on a battery that was already fading. The Route 123 and Beltway cloverleaf
Route 123 is the spine of McLean. It comes in from Chain Bridge Road, becomes Dolley Madison Boulevard, and ties into the Capital Beltway at a full cloverleaf before continuing northeast toward the Dulles Toll Road. Those looping cloverleaf ramps are tight, and traffic peels off the Beltway still carrying speed, so a flat tire or a stall on one of those ramps is one of the worse places to sit in McLean. If it happens to you, do not try to change a tire on the ramp itself. Ease onto the ramp gore or the widest patch of shoulder you can reach, get everyone out on the side away from traffic, and call 703-844-2871. Long driveways in the Langley and Chesterbrook estates
The neighborhoods off Chain Bridge Road and Georgetown Pike, the Langley estates and the older Chesterbrook colonials north of Kirby Road, are wooded and set back, with long and often steep driveways under a heavy tree canopy. A lot of what we recover in here is low-clearance European luxury and all-wheel drive, and neither one belongs on a hook that drags. For those we bring a flatbed and winch the car up level rather than risk scraping a front lip or straining a driveline on the incline. That same tree cover means down limbs after storms, and cars that sit through a cold snap and will not start in the morning.
